What is Learning in Public?

Learning in public means sharing your learning journey as you go – the wins, the struggles, the questions, and the discoveries. It's about being open about what you don't know while actively working to fill those gaps.

Benefits I've Experienced

Deeper Understanding

When you have to explain something, you understand it better. Writing about concepts forces you to organize your thoughts and identify gaps in your knowledge.

Building Connections

Sharing your journey attracts people on similar paths. Some will be ahead of you (potential mentors), others will be behind (people you can help), and many will be alongside you (peers and collaborators).

Creating a Record

Your public learning becomes a searchable archive. I've referred back to my own notes and posts countless times.

How to Start

  1. Pick a platform: Blog, Twitter, YouTube – wherever you're comfortable
  2. Start small: Share one thing you learned today
  3. Be consistent: Regular updates beat sporadic essays
  4. Embrace imperfection: Your early work won't be polished, and that's okay

The Mindset Shift

The hardest part is accepting that you don't need to be an expert to share. In fact, beginners often make the best teachers for other beginners – you remember what it's like to not understand.

Your learning journey might be exactly what someone else needs to see today.
